a Sense of Order

Added on by John Sturr.

Whenever I'm looking I trie to See.  I try to build the frame in my mind and that is hit or miss and sometimes it comes easily and sometimes not at all.  Sometimes it's the weather, the mood, my mood, the people I'm with, or the needs of the dog when I'm walking her -- yadda, yadda, yadda..

Ok -- so you get the point -- sometimes it happens, and sometimes it just doesn't... no matter how hard you try.

But -- there are times when a scene just grabs you -- and that's when I have to get the shot.  And during those times if I don't get the shot then I become obsessed and really bummed I didn't make the image.

So -- here's what I'm getting at -- while walking the dog with my wife this scene caught my eye and I took it hand held on the Nikon F100 with 400 ASA Ilford.  And -- I love this image.  The whole lesson here is while your looking try to see - try to see the superimposed frame in front of you - and sometimes that comes easily, and some times - it just doesn't.

the Fuji

Added on by John Sturr.

This is shot with Fuji's RVP100 - 120 or as I like to call it:  2-1/4 x 2-1/4.  I guess that habit dies hard as my Dad would call it that... I guess I learned that from him.

In the Twin Falls Idaho area, on a road of the way to my brother in-law's house the converging lines caught my eye - and the Sun was really strong during the mid-day.  Sometimes it is really difficult to put everything on hold in order to capture an image - and If I don't grab that image I always feel a bit empty for missing that moment.

Self developed and scanned.

State of Utah

Added on by John Sturr.

I can't help but have the Capitol be the subject for many images - it's so dominate, so grand and placed in a great location.  And when the light is right and it all comes together it is a fine place to be.  This was taken with the Nikon F100 35mm on Fuji Acros 100 developed in a Rodinal Stand development.  As I've said before this is my preferred method of process for BW in the 100 ASA.

On another note - I've decided to purchase another camera - and the funny thing:  it's a body I've had about 4 years ago.  I bought a used Sony Nex-7 - Sony's first 24mp NEX from the 2011 era.  I've been struggling with the Nikon 1V1 with their slow lenses and smallish sensor and the 10 mp density.

But on the Nikon side -- I'm anxious for Nikon to release their new mirrorless system to see what they've come up with to the market.  This is an interesting time -- and every few months it gets more and more interesting; both good and bad.

The Nex-7 gives me a bigger sized sensor, more MP and allows me to easily adapt my nikon lenses.  And - I'm weirdly excited to get my Nex-7 spirit flowing again.  And - one of the most compelling things about the body is the built in flash.

the Scene

Added on by John Sturr.

I'm always trying to see thru the ordinary and capture something which will look good as a photo.  Something which sparks an interesting thought or glance to want to see more.  Getting all of this to work - is really quite a task to accomplish.  Black and White can add something - as would color if the scene is met.  But when it does become evident and the picture does become - it can be magical.

Streetwalk

Added on by John Sturr.

Last Fall I would walk the neighborhood with Lola the English Bulldog and my Nikon F100.  Every once in a while a scene would appear - or - better said - I would will a scene to be captured.  Every photo - every frame - is a stretch of sanity without slapping the shutter release of pure hope something would eventually develop.  And develop is correct as I'm shooting film here -- but I'll stop babbling -- this is what I got in the window of the Architectural firm.

Hagerman

Added on by John Sturr.

This was in Hagerman Idaho.  It was one of those days where I had the time to shoot but I had to dig really deeply to find anything -- really -- anything to shoot.  I walked out side from the house - about 100 yards away and this scene appeared.  And I decided to make it work and capture it as best as i could manage.  Shot on Portra 400 with the Nikon F100.

WW II - Museum

Added on by John Sturr.

Shot at the Museum - quite near the entrance.  The Museum is very nice - but I wish it was bigger !  This images is a BW convert from color.  This may be the first time I've done this, as I'm usually a purest when it comes to the craft.  But - in this case - a BW images really makes this form pop.

As always - no crop and self developed, shot on a Rollei 6008i

from the Front Yard

Added on by John Sturr.

This was shot from the front yard with the F100 and I would assume with the 24-120mm f3.5-5.6.  The light was great - and I probably thought I was shooting color - sometimes I don't pay enough attention to the film roll in the camera.  Stand Development in Rodinal with no crop.

Sometimes the most compelling forms are in your Neighborhood.  Go find some !  Stand Development - no crop.

Shot from the hotel room - I liked capturing the architectural forms of the squares from afar while filling the frame.

SLC Capitol

Shot with the F100 and the 80-200mm f2.8 AFs lens.  The AFs lens was purchased probably 8 years ago when I couldn't afford the 70-200 new.  So I did some research and found out that the 80-200 had a loyal following and it was quite the performer.  But -- it had no VR.  And even to this day - I've never shot a VR lens.  Fuji Acros 100 film and Stand Developed in Rodinal for 60 minutes.  That's the standard now -- Stand Development - and -- it is wonderful !  And as always - no crop.

Colorado of Last Year

Added on by John Sturr.

This image was captured in Colorado last year -- Near the RNP in September of 2016.  But - I can't remember if this was with the Rollei or the YashicaMat124G.  It turned out really well.

the Creatives

I am really lucky to be with a firm in which it's center product is one of the result of the efforts of creativity.  The business of Architecture is as much of an Art as it is a Discipline for results which fit the need.  Ok -- that was a bit heady . . .

This image - as wth many - was a grab shot, as I sit next to Ying, and Pierre was marking something up for discussion.  Film -- no crop -- self developed and scanned.

Shot at FFKR Architects in Salt Lake City - yes, FFKR is where I call my day job.  But -- a part of that job is photographing the office.  And it's a good gig.
